In Psalm 122:6 we are encouraged to pray for the peace of God’s holy city and the “city of the great king” – for Jerusalem:
“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May those who love you be secure” (Ps. 122:6).
At the same time the Bible tells us that a permanent and stable peace will only come when the “prince of peace” has returned to his own city. Then Jerusalem will come into the fullness of all the promises which God has given it – into its full glory. But in order for this to happen, millions of prayerful watchmen are called to “remind” God by way of intercession of these biblical promises:
“For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet, till her vindication shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. The nations will see your vindication, and all kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will bestow ... I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the Lord, give yourselves no rest, and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth” (Isa. 62:1-2+6-7).
Jerusalem will be the central focus of the end-time conflicts before the Lord Himself returns to the Mount of Olives, east of the Old City of Jerusalem, as foretold:
“On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem …” (Zech.14:4a).
Therefore, Jerusalem indeed deserves our highest level of attention in prayer and intercession.
